Way back in the day, Hush Puppies literally invented the comfy-casual shoe with the idea that bright colors, soft leathers and suedes, and fun and funky patterns would give people a better way to express themselves. So, now, to celebrate our heritage and the idea of individuality, we’re re-releasing some of the original styles that made us famous and talking to people whose individuality and original style inspires us.

Meet Denny Balmaceda a menswear blogger and content creator based in the New York/New Jersey area. He also does social media and is one of the owners of the online shop Double Team Vintage.

You started sharing your personal style online around 2007. What inspired you to start documenting your style and life?

It was mainly because I wasn’t able to attend college due to unfortunate circumstances. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise because that’s when I started posting a daily outfit diary for myself to keep sane! 13 years later, here we are! Everything was organic and I am truly grateful every single day because it has become my career. I’ve taught myself how to photograph, sharpened my styling and over grew as a person both in style and mind.

How do you describe your personal style?

I always describe my style as a movie character. It’s like seeing a Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorcese or Wes Anderson character come to life.

Do you have any style tips for making an outfit more original?

For me, it’s adding an accessory that you can wear everyday. I always wear hats and the same jewelry everyday. It’s like having a uniform.

How did you get into wearing and selling vintage?

When I was young, I couldn’t really afford buying brand new clothes, so I discovered a Salvation Army and the Goodwill and from then on, I fell in love with it. As I’ve gotten further with my career, I started leaning towards curated vintage more after getting a job at a vintage store. To this day, I still love to thrift and most of my pieces are vintage. It’s become a huge part of my persona.

What is your most prized vintage piece?

I have a lot! but my most valued ones are vintage varsity jackets that friends found for me with “ Denny “ on it.

How do you incorporate color into your wardrobe?

I feel like since I am a lover of vintage that my palette always involved color. A colorful wardrobe really brightens up my day and others too. I’ve always preferred it. It’s much more fun.

Where do you go to get inspired?

I am mostly inspired by movies or music videos but people watching and discovering personal styles is also where I get inspiration from.
